Your data
Privacy Policy
The short version. Serious Reps keeps your data on your phone. There are no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and there are no third-party SDKs in the app. The coach runs on your phone. Apple Health data stays on your phone: it is never put in your iCloud backup, never sent to a server and never used for advertising. Two things can leave your phone, and only if you turn them on: a backup to your own private iCloud, which we can't read, and squads, if you join one.
1. Who we are
Serious Reps is an iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch app for body recomposition: building muscle and losing fat around the middle. It is made by an independent developer. In this policy "we" means the developer of Serious Reps and "you" means the person using it.
Questions or requests about your data: seriousreps@starthing.space.
2. What stays on your phone
You don't need an account to use Serious Reps. Everything you enter or record is kept on your device:
- Your profile: age, height, weight, waist and other measurements, units, schedule and training experience. If you give them, also your identity, the puberty you went through and hormones or HRT. These are used only for the body-fat maths and are never shown to anyone else.
- Your plan, workouts and sets, food and protein, wake-up check-ins, walks and runs with their GPS routes, readiness, period days (if you mark them), body scans you enter, games and reflections.
- Your journal, including its voice notes and photos.
- Progress photos, meal photos and set clips (short videos of a set, kept only if you ask for one).
- Your coach conversations and what the coach remembers.
This data is stored in the app's own files with iOS data protection. The main file is readable only after you have unlocked your phone once since it last restarted, so that Siri, your watch and the rest timer can save while the phone is in your pocket. Photos, voice notes, meal photos and set clips use iOS's strongest file protection: they can only be read while your phone is unlocked.
Serious Reps' files are left out of iCloud and computer device backups on purpose. The only copy that leaves your phone is the optional iCloud backup below, so its settings really decide what goes.
A few settings for this phone only, such as appearance, the Face ID lock and the backup switches, are kept in the app's own settings on the device.
3. iCloud backup (optional, off until you turn it on)
In Settings › Backup & privacy you can turn on Back up to iCloud. The backup is a single record in the private database of your own iCloud account (Apple CloudKit). We can't see it or read it. Apple stores it encrypted, and if you turn on Advanced Data Protection it is end-to-end encrypted.
What's in it
- Your plan, profile, workouts, food, check-ins, readiness, walks and their routes, and coach conversations and memory.
- Your journal text, while Include journal is on. It is on by default once backup is on, and you can turn it off.
- Period days, only while Include cycle days is on. It is off by default.
- The name of the device that made the backup, so you can recognise it before restoring.
What's never in it
- Photos, journal voice notes, meal photos and set clips.
- Anything that came from Apple Health. A check-in whose weight was taken from Health is left out, sleep hours filled from Health are removed, and a "Steps now" level set from Health's step average goes back to your own last choice. When you restore, your phone keeps its own Health values.
- This phone's settings, including the Face ID lock.
Serious Reps backs up when you tap Back up now, and quietly when the app goes to the background if backup is on and it has been at least six hours since the last one. Restoring always shows you the date and device of the backup first.
4. Apple Health
Serious Reps only connects to Apple Health when you choose to: Settings › Health › Connect Apple Health, or Fill from Health in the wake-up check-in. Nothing asks for Health access when the app opens. You choose exactly what Serious Reps may read and write on Apple's own permission screen, and you can change it any time in the Health app.
What Serious Reps reads, and why
- Steps, to suggest your daily step level ("Steps now"), and — only if you turn on the walk or move-break reminder — to decide on your phone whether that reminder is needed. For those two, Apple Health may wake Serious Reps in the background when new steps arrive; the steps are read on your phone, held in memory and never saved or sent anywhere.
- Sleep, to fill in last night's hours in the wake-up check-in.
- Weight, to offer a recent weigh-in when you measure.
- Protein logged by other apps today, shown in Serious Reps' Health settings.
- Workouts from other apps, shown under Plan as "From Apple Health". They are only shown, never saved into Serious Reps.
Health figures only suggest. Nothing in Serious Reps changes until you tap to accept it. Serious Reps leaves out the samples it wrote itself, so they never come back as suggestions.
What Serious Reps writes, and why
- The strength workouts you finish in Serious Reps and the protein you log, so Health has the whole picture. You can turn this off.
- Your weight from check-ins, only if you turn on Save weight from check-ins.
Everything written is something you logged. If you undo a food in Serious Reps it is removed from Health too.
What Serious Reps never does with Health data
- It is never used for advertising or marketing.
- It is never sold, and never shared with third parties or data brokers.
- It is never stored in iCloud (see section 3).
- It is never sent to a server or to a squad.
On Apple Watch, Serious Reps reads your heart rate during a workout, and your resting heart rate, to tell you when you're ready for the next set. That stays on the watch.
5. Squads (optional)
Squads are small invite-only groups for training with friends. They are the only part of Serious Reps that sends data to a server we run, and only if you create an account. If you never join a squad, this part doesn't apply to you: nothing is sent anywhere.
Squads are hosted on Supabase, which stores the data on our behalf. When you use squads, this is what is stored:
- Your email address and a password for the account. The password is handled by the sign-in service and is not stored in readable form.
- The display name your squad sees.
- The squads you create or join, their names and invite codes, and when you joined.
- What you post: text, and any workout or check-in card you choose to share, which can include numbers such as sets, time or a change in your waist or weight.
- Your reactions to posts.
- Challenges you create (title, what's counted, target, dates and an optional friendly stake such as "loser buys coffee", never money) and the days you count toward a challenge. A challenge day is just a date: for example, the day you finished a workout.
- People you block, and reports you file (with the reason you give).
- A daily count of wrong invite-code attempts, to stop code guessing.
- If you turn on Show my dots to the squad (off until you do): three yes/no flags a day — trained, protein day, walked. Never a weight, a measurement or a photo. Turning it off deletes them.
- Spots you save for your squad: the type (gym, park or outdoor bars), a name, a one-line note and the pin, rounded to about 10 metres.
- “How busy is it?” answers (quiet, some or packed) with the gym's name. Your squad sees them for two hours, and they are deleted after a day.
- Plans you choose to share: the plan's name, workouts, exercises, sets, reps and rest, and your working weights only if you tick that. Anyone signed in to Serious Reps who has the plan's 12-character code can open it; plans can't be listed or searched. Your name is not attached to it.
Every row carries your account's user ID. Other members see only the squads they belong to, and blocking hides content both ways. Your Health data, journal, photos, voice notes and coach conversations are never sent to squads. Requests are sent over HTTPS and nothing from squads is cached on your phone. Your sign-in is kept in the iOS Keychain.
6. Camera, LiDAR, microphone, photos, location and Face ID
Serious Reps asks for each permission the first time you use the feature that needs it, never at launch.
- Camera. Used only when you ask: to count your reps during a set (the phone reads your body's position on the device), to take a progress photo (the background is removed on your phone before the photo is saved), or to photograph a plate (the phone guesses the foods on the device, and you check them before anything is logged). Video frames are read on your phone and dropped. A set is only saved if you ask for a clip.
- LiDAR depth. On iPhones with LiDAR, the rear camera's depth can measure how far you move in a rep, or estimate your waist and hip. The depth data is processed on your phone and never uploaded. The estimate is only saved if you choose to use it.
- Microphone. Used only when you record a voice note in your journal. The recording stays on your phone, is never uploaded and is never given to the coach. Serious Reps does not use speech recognition.
- Photo library. When you pick a photo, iOS's own picker hands Serious Reps only the photo you chose. Serious Reps can't see the rest of your library. If you choose Save Image or Save Video in a share sheet, iOS asks once for permission to add to your photos. That permission is add-only, so Serious Reps still can't read your library.
- Location. Used only while you record a walk or run, to draw the route and measure the distance. It keeps working with the screen locked while a walk is recording, and stops the moment you pause or finish. When you save a squad spot and tap Use where I am, Serious Reps reads your location once to drop the pin, then stops. Serious Reps never uses location at any other time. The route is saved on your phone (and in your iCloud backup, if that's on). The map itself is drawn by Apple Maps.
- Face ID, Touch ID or passcode. Only if you turn on Lock private things. It protects your journal, progress photos and meal diary. Serious Reps never sees your face data; iOS only tells it whether unlocking succeeded.
- Notifications. Asked for after your first finished workout (or when you turn on a reminder or use the interval timer), never at launch. Every notification is scheduled on your phone; see section 10.
7. The coach
The coach runs entirely on your phone. On phones with Apple Intelligence it uses Apple's on-device model; otherwise the built-in Learn chapters answer. Every reply says which one answered. Nothing you ask the coach, and none of your numbers, is sent to us or to any other company. The coach can read your plan, lifts, protein, check-ins and recovery, but never your journal, photos or period days. Conversations are kept on your phone, and you can clear them in the coach.
8. Siri, Shortcuts and the Action Button
Serious Reps' Siri and Shortcuts actions (such as "Log a palm of protein in Serious Reps" or "Start today's workout in Serious Reps") run on your phone. When you log something while your phone is locked, it is kept in a small file on the phone until Serious Reps next opens and takes it in. Serious Reps sends nothing about these actions anywhere. Apple's handling of what you say to Siri is covered by Apple's own privacy policy.
9. Apple Watch
The watch app and your iPhone talk directly using Apple's WatchConnectivity. The phone sends the workout (exercise names, sets, target reps and weights, and your units). The watch sends back each set you confirm: the reps, the weight and, when it counted them, the reps it counted from your wrist's motion. Wrist motion and heart rate are read on the watch and not uploaded. The watch runs a workout session so it can keep reading your heart rate with your wrist down, but it doesn't save that workout to Health; your iPhone saves the finished session once.
10. Serious Reps Plus, notifications and feedback
- Subscriptions. Serious Reps Plus is bought through Apple. Apple handles the payment and tells the app only whether a subscription is active and when it renews; we never see your name, card or Apple Account. Each purchase carries a random identifier made on your phone (not linked to you, your body or any account), which Apple attaches to the purchase.
- Notifications. Workout-day reminders, the kind check-ins after a quiet stretch, the renewal reminder and the optional daily habits (water, a walk, move breaks, the wake-up check-in, wind down, mobility, a check-in day, meal prep, supplements, a lighter week) are all local notifications, scheduled by your phone. Daily habits are off until you turn each one on. Nothing about any of them is sent to us or to anyone. They never contain your weight, waist, body fat, photos or journal text. You can change or turn off each one in Settings › Notifications.
- Feedback. Settings › Send feedback opens your own Mail app with your message filled in; you send it yourself. The app version, iOS version and phone model are added only while "Include app and device info" is on. Nothing about your body, workouts or journal is ever added.
11. What we don't do
- No advertising, and no advertising identifiers.
- No analytics, crash-reporting or tracking tools, and no third-party SDKs of any kind.
- No tracking across other companies' apps or websites.
- We don't sell or rent your data, and we don't share it with data brokers.
- Your data is never used to train AI models.
The only services Serious Reps talks to are Apple's (iCloud, Apple Health, Apple Maps, Siri, the App Store) and our Supabase project, if you use squads.
12. Keeping and deleting your data
We keep squad data only while your account exists. Everything else is on your phone or in your own iCloud, under your control.
- Erase everything on this device (Settings › Account): removes everything Serious Reps keeps on this phone: your data file, the workout in progress, Siri's pending logs, photos, voice notes, meal photos, set clips, coach conversations, this phone's Serious Reps settings, scheduled reminders and your squad sign-in. It can also delete your iCloud backup at the same time.
- Delete account and shared data (Settings › Account, when signed in to squads): permanently deletes your account, profile, posts, reactions, squad memberships, challenge days, effort dots, spots, busyness answers, shared plans and blocks from our server. Reports you filed are removed. Squads and challenges you created stay for their other members without your name on them. Reports other people made about you are kept for moderation, without your account attached.
- Delete iCloud backup (Settings › Backup & privacy): removes the backup from your private iCloud. Everything on your phone stays.
- Apple Health: workouts, protein and weight that Serious Reps saved belong to Health. Delete them in the Health app.
- Deleting the app removes its files and settings from the phone. Your squad sign-in is kept in the iOS Keychain, which iOS keeps after deleting an app, so a fresh install removes it on first launch. Deleting the app does not delete your iCloud backup or your squad account; use the options above for those.
You can also email us to ask what squad data we hold about you, to correct it or to delete it.
13. Age
Serious Reps is rated 16+ and is not meant for anyone under 16. The app only accepts ages from 16. We don't knowingly collect data from children. If you think a child has created a squad account, email us and we'll delete it.
14. Changes to this policy
If we change what Serious Reps collects or how it's used, we'll update this page and its effective date before the change ships, and say so in the app's release notes. If a change would send data somewhere new, the app will ask you first.
15. Contact
